Concert With Nottingham Symphony Orchestra

Saturday 3rd March 2018, 7.30pm at Nottingham Albert Hall

If you missed the girls wonderful performance, in the final movement of Holst’s Planets with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra last year, you have another chance to hear their ethereal performance, this time with Nottingham Symphony Orchestra.

In an all English  programme, Margarita Balanas performs Elgar’s beautifully elegaic cello concerto, one of the cornerstone’s in the cello repertoire. Nottingham Symphony Orchestra will also perform the Johannesburg Festival Overture by William Walton, written in 1956, it incorporates the main theme of Jean Bosco Mwenda’s “Masanga” a song released in 1954, and uses three percussionists playing eleven instruments to cover the African rhythms included in the piece! The climax will be the enduringly popular ‘Planets Suite’ written by Holst in the first two years of the First World War. Inspiration quite noticeable especially in ‘Mars’, the first movement of the work, subtitled, ‘The Bringer of War’.

Tickets for this concert are unreserved and are available from the Nottingham Symphony Orchestra website, www. nottinghamsymphony.org, or through www.ticketsource.co.uk/date/437287. Tickets are £14 General admission, £12 Concessions and £5 children.

Cantamus 50th Anniversary Weekend

12th, 13th, 14th October 2018 – save the dates

2018 sees a major milestone in the History of Cantamus as we celebrate a half Century since our beloved Pamela started Cantamus in 1968. Plans are already well advanced and we have an enthusiastic Committee working to make this an extra special event.

We are planning several events, with the high point being a concert in The Albert Hall, Nottingham, on Saturday 13th October 2018.  There will have been over 500 “girls” in Cantamus in the 50 years of its existence and we are hoping that we can amass a chorus of 500 voices for this very special concert.

Please keep the dates free in your diaries as we would love to see you all over the weekend. The plans so far are to have

  • an informal social event on Friday 12th October in the evening,
  • a special lunch for all ex members on Saturday 13th October followed by the afternoon rehearsal and tea with the current choirs before the concert at the Albert Hall
  • and finally a family event on the morning of Sunday 14th October with a traditional Sunday lunch to follow.

We want to give everyone the flexibility to be part of this very special weekend and having several events means that you can choose which events you wish to attend. We will be updating you all over the coming months with how the plans are progressing and the cost of the various events.

So that we can gauge interest could you email John Guy on info@cantamus.com to say if you are considering coming to the events. It would also be useful if you have any contact details of friends who have not had contact with the choir over the last few years and you know would be interested to receive information about the weekend. Again please forward these to the Cantamus email account above.

We look forward to celebrating with you all in October 2018
